This project aims to hybridize the driving experience and the learning experience into a holistic program by constructing a flux structure—a flowing system that metaphorically weaves individual sensitivity with the surrounding environment.
Drawing inspiration from the column structure of Toyo Ito’s Sendai Mediatheque, the project explores how information flows and how individuals, as receivers, should engage with ever-changing surroundings.
Structurally, the project questions whether the geometry of a building determines the flexibility of its structure, or whether the structure itself dictates the rigidity or adaptability of the space.
Can the physical qualities of materials such as concrete be reimagined through the use of porosity and permeability? A library should not be sealed like a waterproof package, nor should information be confined within a static envelope.
This new drive-through library learns how to breathe. It imitates the process of contraction and expansion—becoming a living system of knowledge exchange.
